Education.

The last couple of days I’ve been getting my schedule together for the Fall 08 semester. I’m only taking two classes this time because I can’t afford a full schedule but I will in Spring 09. I’m thinking about taking Economics and Accounting, I’m going to for my Bachelor’s in Business Management. I only have 1 1/2 to 2 years left. If I stay dedicated and focused I’ll have my degree in no time. I would’ve had my degree last year but a few circumstances in my life prevented that but, hey, at least I’m still in school, right?

I wish we had more young black men in college instead of running the streets “trying” to be thugs/gangsters or whatever they call themselves these days. A lot of the younger males try to follow what they see on TV and it’s very sad if you ask me. Not everybody can be a rapper/singer/actor and most of these celebrities have degrees but don’t let it be known. But there’s a lot of men out there who feel they are too pretty to work certain places because they don’t want to get dirty. Hell, I work for UPS and I get dirty all the time, that’s why I come home and take, what they call in my country, a shower! And, yes, my country is the same as yours, USA! I try my best to encourage my little brothers and my high school guy friends to not give up and that the light is at the end of the tunnel. College is hard but it has a greater reward at the end, a degree can open up so many doors. I know for me, I’m a part time supervisor but, when I get my degree my opportunities are endless.

Wow, it’s 615 AM and I’m up for no apparent reason at all. Okay, let me go back to dream land where I was being chased by Orlando Bloom on the beach :) TA TA

Oh, by the way my birthday is August 15th, 14 more days, I’ll be 23! YAY ME :)

School…how I miss it. I keep saying I’m going to look into online classes & seriously I am going to one day. Very soon.

Men today just have a different agenda lately. A lot of them think they HAVE to live the thug life, like they have no other choice, which is really sad. And in this world people really need to drop the mentality like they are too good to work anywhere. The thought of me working at a McDonalds used to be funny but with the Benefits & great pay they offer their employees I’d work there in a MINUTE.

The problem is there is not enough emphasis on education for many young black men. It starts in the home where the father might not be present or the mother is not around to tell him he has worth and is more than selling drugs on the street and settling to that kind of life. Alot of them do what they do because that is all they know therefore they are not to blame. its the ones who know better and they have been taught right and wrong paths in life and they rebel who are to blame

Yeah, I say just more Black men doing well. Going to college does not automatically mean you’ll become successful in general.

I think it’s a very good thing that you’ve decided to go back to school. It’s never too late!

I wish there were more black men who would get themselves together as well. It seems that alot of them see the lives of these celebrities and think that taking that road is the easy way out, when it’s not. Not every is going to be successful at rapping/producing, etc.

I love college. Seriously, when I’m not in school I feel like something is missing. I wont be able to go back until March of 09′ and I’m not feeling that. I understand how stressful it is, yet I don’t understand in todays world how anyone thinks they are going to be anything without the proper education .. even if its just a trade school. Good luck in your classes!

My son isn’t even here yet and my mother already has his college fund set up. He will know, just as I did, from a young age that college in this household is not an option - its a requirement. No son of mine is going to be holding up some street corner with his posse. Screw that right now.

Wait until you’re like 28, you see A LOT of available professional black men. They shed their “thug” skin and it is ALL good. Anyways! Happy [early] birthday!

it’s definitely good that you’re in school despite what has happened, even if it’s taking you a bit longer to get your degree based on circumstances beyond your control. what matters is that you’re doing it. unfortunately the media glamorizes the rap start lifestyle and fails to mention the college degrees that some of the celebrities do have. nothing is ever handed to us on a silver platter, you gotta work to get yours. you said it right, college can be difficult but the reward at the end makes it worth it.

i’m proud of you. as long as you get that degree thats what counts. keep ya head up and keep truckin!
i dont like the jobs i do have but its something that HELPS TO PAY THE BILLS. its great you’re being a role model for the young folk…they desparately need that in their lives when other influences want to suggest otherwise.
